SLR Camera Case

If you own a digital SLR camera, you’ve already figured out how fragile they are. A good SLR camera case is a must-own accessory for SLR camera owners.

The good news is there’s a variety of SLR camera cases for you to choose from. These cases come in all shapes and sizes, from small form-fitted cases all the way up to backpack-style SLR camera cases with enough pouches to pack lunch for a week. Knowing how to select the right SLR camera case comes down to asking yourself one question:

How much gear are you going to haul around with your digital SLR camera?

Yes, digital SLR cameras are easy to break — unlike traditional cameras in which the fragile lens is inside the camera’s body when the camera is not in use, SLR camera lenses are never encased in the body and tend to get scratched if not closed in a case. Also, digital SLR cameras have lots of “holes” that lead to trouble — one opening for the lens, one for the memory card, an opening for the battery, etc. Each one of the openings to your digital SLR camera allows dust, sand, dirt, and weather to get in your camera and ruin it.

There are three basic styles of digital SLR camera cases — form-fitting, small camera bags, and backpack-style slingpacks.

The form-fitting style SLR camera cases are designed with specific cameras in mind. They are designed to “wrap around” the body of the camera, so they are intended for use with a single model. If the basic camera and lens setup you bought takes pictures you love, get a form-fitting case that fits well.

The small camera bag style camera cases are best for amateur photographers who use a handful of lenses. They’re big enough to carry a few extra lenses, but not so big that you’re wasting space. Thinking you might branch out in the future and buy an extra lens or accessory for your camera? If so, the form-fitting case is too small. Buy a small camera bag with enough room for your camera and a few accessories. This gives you room to grow your hobby in the future.

They are great for hiking trips and other times where you don’t need to pack a lot of gear, but want your camera along for the ride.

Backpack style SLR camera cases (sometimes called “slingpacks”) are meant for photographers who carry a ton of gear most of the time. Don’t buy the backpack just to look cool — if you don’t fill it with stuff, it is a waste of money and a waste of space. If you plan to own more than one digital SLR camera, or tons of accessories for one, you need a bigger bag. The bigger bag allows for a quick “sunset” moment — grab your bag and get out the door.

Amazon.com is a great source for inexpensive SLR camera cases. Here’s a form-fitting style for around $20, while the more expensive “slingpack” will run you almost $60.
